Costume and Visual Identity in Spy Thrillers- Alejandra A.

 What I Researched

In terms of the current stage of the project, I decided to investigate how costume and visual identity are used within spy thrillers to create character, status, and intent. In many spy thriller films that fall under the thriller genre, costume and appearance are not only used as a form of aesthetics but can also be used as a form of storytelling device. The style that a character wears can represent professionalism, secrecy, confidence, or deception before any dialogue is spoken.

Costume design is a major contributor to the creation of identity because spy films often involve hidden agendas and loyalties. The style that a character wears can represent whether or not they blend in with their surroundings or if they stand out as someone powerful or dangerous.

Costume as a Tool for Character Identity

One of the most common ideas concerning the use of costumes within spy thrillers is the idea of wearing sleek and well-controlled outfits. This character will often be seen wearing a suit or a dress to represent the level of confidence and professionalism.

Another idea concerning the use of costumes within the film genre of spy thrillers is the idea of flexibility.Spies have also been known to alter their physical appearance to allow themselves to move freely without any suspicion. This could have been achieved by changing the type of clothing the spy wears or by wearing sunglasses and a hat. These ideas would be very useful in the depiction of the concept of deception, which is often part of the film genre of spy thrillers.

Another key idea with costume is the idea of distinguishing between the character's public identity and hidden identity. A character can be seen to be elegant and poised in one situation but a completely different character once they take off their disguise. This helps to create a level of tension with the audience as they become aware that the character is not who they seem to be.

Color and Style in Spy Costumes

In spy movies, color selection is sometimes employed as a plot strategy. Colors like black, gray, or dark blue are commonly used, as these colors connote professionalism, mystery, and control. They may also be useful for blending into the background, especially if the background is dark or at night.

Minimalistic clothing designs are also commonly used. Unlike other action movies, where the character is depicted wearing flashy clothing, spy movies depict the character wearing clothing that is efficient. This is because the character is focused.

Accessories are also sometimes used to communicate information about the character. The accessories like the watch, gloves, sunglasses, or the handbag may be used for utility or aesthetics. In some movies, accessories may carry gadgets as well, which is a reflection of the theme that things are not what they seem to be.

Visual Identity Beyond Costume

Although clothing is significant in the case of visual identity in the spy thriller genre of movies, other elements of movement, posture, and the way the characters present themselves to the audience must also be taken into consideration. The way in which the characters in the movie move, or even the way in which they pose themselves, is as important as the clothing they wear.

It is of significance to note that the way in which the characters in the movie are calm and composed in their posture is aimed at depicting the visual identity of the characters in the movie in a way in which it is suggested that the characters in the movie have something sinister within them.

Why Costume Matters for Suspense

Costume and visual identity contribute to suspense because it helps the audience interpret the character. When the character is well-groomed, it may lead the audience to think that there is something the character is hiding. This keeps the audience engaged because it is suspenseful. In the case of thriller spy movies, costume helps communicate the character’s traits over a short period of time.
